Port Richmond: Little Shops of Hope For Employment

November 4, 2009

by Amy Fuhrmeister

Like every part of Philadelphia, Port Richmond has been feeling the wrath of decreased employment for the past years. Comprised of small eateries, corner pizza shops and small firms and private companies, this neighborhood  clearly shows its rundown businesses, as most sit on Richmond Street besides Interstate 95.

Counting factors like Richmond Street and the closing of Northeastern hospital back in the fall, which cut thousands of jobs for medical professionals, this area is seeing some of their major industries — service providing & goods producing– that used to generate jobs for their people, diminish.

The lack of attention and effort given to these once was stores has become a snow ball effect spreading itself in pockets up and down streets.

There is hope in some eyes like Tacconelli’s pizzeria owner Rosann Tacconeli that with the construction of the new Sugar House casino in the works, it could provide jobs for residents. Along with a positive outlook is Philadelphia Unemployment Project’s job developer manager Faith Whitehead believes that employment stability can be possible with business promoting, self persistence and trying new outlets in your career with the skills you already own.
