Olney: Stooge Larry Fine Inducted into Central High Hall of Fame

Who says acting like a stooge won’t get you places? It sure worked for Louis Feinberg.

On Oct. 15, the Associated Alumni of Central High School held its 15th annual induction ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Sheraton Society Hill. Those who attended were greeted by the sounds of string instruments and tables full of appetizers. Dressed in formal wear, inductees, alumni and students alike immersed themselves in small talk while waiting for the event to begin.

As they waited, a small crowd gathered around two …

Olney: Programs for Battling Childhood Obesity

The doors of the basement swing open revealing the church’s activities center. Motivational posters dot the walls surrounding a small basketball court. A semi-circle of metal folding chairs sits off in the far corner. On any given night the sounds of a friendly basketball game or the lively chatter of a community meeting would replace the silence. This Friday, Pastor Margaret Powell hopes that the walls of the basement at Solid Rock United …

Olney: Roots Community Garden Pitches in at Annual Health and Safety Festival

Across from Fisher Park, the sound of a bass guitar and the smell of barbecue fill the air. Attendees of the second annual Family Health and Safety Festival slowly mill back and forth through the booths set up along both sides of West Spencer Street. Some stop and chat with the volunteers sitting behind the fold-up tables, while others barely give a curious glace as they walk towards the food at the end of the street.

Olney: A Fallen Officer Remembered

The rain fell in the 35th Police District in a rather apropos statement. The Fraternal Order of Police was dedicating a plaque to Police Officer Louis J. Vasger, who was killed in the line of duty on  April 13, 1973, while attempting to stop a holdup in progress at Kain’s Bar, now the Exodus, located at 4748 N. Broad St.

The plaque in Officer Vasger’s honor was placed before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 4720 N. Broad St.

Olney: St. Paul is the Hand That Feeds

At the corner of Fifth and Nedro streets is St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Like many among the plethora of churches in Olney, regardless of faith, St. Paul’s has an ornate and somewhat old structure that many people pass without giving a second thought. However, it is what goes on behind the doors of St. Paul’s that separates it from the rest.

Here at St. Paul’s is the only …
