Like every agency within city government, the Philadelphia Police Department has taken some cuts in its budget. But 39th Police District Capt. Stephen Glenn wouldn’t know anything about that.
“We’re not doing any worse off,” Glenn said. “With budget restrictions I don’t know if the police department is hiring at the same level now. But we have more police officers since Nutter came in. More than we ever got under Street.”
Glenn’s not talking about just a few more officers either. He’s talking about 20 more, a significant number than can affect change and …

Nine years ago, Michael Hayward knew that the neighborhood around his home at 12th and Wingohocking streets was facing tough times. The “sinking homes” disaster had caused many responsible homeowners to move out of the area, and the strength of the existing Logan community organization had diminished considerably.
So Hayward and a neighbor–Sonya Bryant–decided that they would to do something to combat the apathy that existed in …

Greg Bucceroni sat down in his office chair and insisted he describe where his life’s path has led him. In the 1970s, Bucceroni was a juvenile delinquent in the Brooklyn and Manhattan. “I was very violent as a kid, and some of the people I associated with were the real life gangsters from the movie ‘GoodFellas,’” he said. As a runaway youth, he would steal, would be the eyes and ears of prostitution rings and would loot various stores across southern New Jersey, New York City and Philadelphia. He told the story no hesitation and …

Wearing a neon green hat to match the color of his shirt and plaid shorts, Clifford Reynolds addressed the crowd with a look of sincerity and hope. As he spoke through the microphone, his words echoed more than to just the crowd standing in front of him, but to the community at whole.
“We’d like to thank everyone for coming out and showing your love. …

It was a bright and warm Saturday afternoon in Kensington. A week after the attack, family, friends and neighbors gathered in McPherson Square Park to show their support for the victim and to celebrate the 11-year-old girl’s return from the hospital after being raped on her way to school last Tuesday.
“Let’s dedicate ourselves to making sure that nothing like this ever happens again,” Mayor Michael Nutter said at the event. “And through this …
