Germantown: Whose Fault is the Litter Problem?

It’s a warm sunny day at Vernon Park in Germantown. Moms bring babies out in strollers to get some fresh air. But it doesn’t take long for wrappers and bottles to get caught in those stroller wheels. It’s obvious Vernon Park, like many other areas in Germantown, has a litter problem. The residents whose everyday lives this litter affects have a lot to say on the topic, both of the city and of themselves.
“I think it’s a nice park, but the city needs to get out here and clean it up,” says Felicia Thomas, a Germantown …

It’s cleaning day in the Wilson-Heard home on Wagner Avenue. The father is using the vacuum upstairs, as 7-year-old Bryant runs down the stairs of the well-kept row home. “Mommy, can I pour my own cereal for breakfast?”
They are the sounds that can be heard within any typical home on a Sunday morning, but sadly, they are sounds that could be short lived in this house.

Strawberry Mansion: Digging for Solutions

Every big city has its neighborhoods to avoid after the sun sets, but in Philadelphia, our problem can be seen everywhere and they cannot be avoided. The difference between a city such as Washington, D.C., and North Philadelphia is that in Washington, the slums are only seen from a distance. But in Philadelphia our badlands are an eyeshot away.
Scattered throughout Philadelphia, yet more prevalent in some areas, abandoned buildings, warehouses and homes provide a constant reminder of what was once a location for commerce, production and living. According to the 2000 Census, Philadelphia had almost …

Guns in Philadelphia

View Slide Show
There is no shortage of customers at Colosimo’s Gun Store on the 900 block of Spring Garden Street. A group of young men are buzzed into the store every few minutes, each time bringing in a gust of cold air through the door with a National Rifle Association sticker plastered on it. Eager customers talk excitedly among themselves while they press their noses against the glass cabinets lined with handguns. Outside, two New Yorkers wearing Yankee caps smoke cigarettes while they wait for the …
