Suburban Station: Riding the Rails in Time of Need

Beneath the surface of Suburban Station lies an organized chaos. Police officers and SEPTA personnel corral Regional Rail passengers into lines that wind through the station. It’s difficult to tell where one line ends and the next begins. The overhead time displays are unreadable through the massive crowds of people. There are people standing in line, bewildered. There is confusion everywhere with no end in sight.

When SEPTA announced the strike, it seemed commuters had a glimmer of hope shining from the Regional Rail stations. Since Regional Rail trains are not affected by the strike, daily …

Fairhill: Underground Transportation Above Ground

“Cab….cab…. cab…”
Looking around, you may not see a yellow sedan or hear the familiar screech and stop and hasty honk of a commercial cab company. There may no rooftop light or fare meter, perhaps only a simple four-door unmarked sedan.
But you will hear is

Nicetown and Tioga: Don’t Own a Car? It’s SEPTA for You

Not many in Nicetown or Tioga can say their neighborhood doesn’t have multiple options when it comes to public transportation from SEPTA. All Regional Rail lines, except the R4, crisscross the neighborhood like a deformed tic-tac-toe board. Buses constantly crawl across various streets in the neighborhood. Walnut Hill: It’s an “El-ebration!”

Comfort. Elegance. Convenience.

These are hardly adjectives one would typically use to describe a ride on the Market subway line.

But SEPTA is hoping that will change for commuters in West Philadelphia.

On Sept. 12, SEPTA officials, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell and over 300 community members, gathered to celebrate the end of the Market East Elevated

Mantua: Transportation Assistance Provided for Elderly Residents

Public transportation for the elderly residents of Mantua and Parkside can be a struggle to find. Handicaps make taking local buses and trolleys run by South Eastern Philadelphia Transit Authority (SEPTA), a struggle. Further, with over 40 percent of the area living below the poverty line, affordable alternatives are difficult to come by.

Seniors in the neighborhoods can take solace in the services offered by Haddington Multi Services for Older Adults, located on Haverford Avenue in West Philadelphia. The senior community center, which provides everything from a home cooked meal to computer classes, also offers SEPTA’s paratransit service—for free.
