Philadelphia reporters tackle media relations issues with StOC class

How do media really feel about public relations people? Are there PR people who really know how to create good relationships with the media? Do they try to manipulate the media or fail to understand their needs? What about ethics on both sides?
Members of the print, trade and broadcast media attacked all these questions, and more, during a Strategic Communication Department “Introduction to Public Relations” class taught by adjunct Lou Grossman March 22. A 30-year-plus veteran of the public relations field, Grossman has been running these types of sessions for the past six years.
“This was the best — the best panel and the best class participation,” he said. The media panel consisted of Bruce Gordon and Dave Schratwieser, reporters from Fox 29; David Madden, CLA ’77, KYW Newsradio, reporter and anchor; Linda Loyd, Philadelphia Inquirer business reporter; and Dan Reynolds, editor of trade publication Risk & Insurance.
“These journalists volunteered their time for Temple students, and showed such interest and candor,” said Grossman. “They loved our students, and the students really embraced them.”
Fox 29 sent a cameraman to the class to shoot b-roll, which ran with a short news item about the class on the “10 O’clock News” that night.
