JOUR professor comments on secrecy around newspaper sale

The current owners of Philadelphia’s two major newspapers are mulling over bids from at least two groups that would like to buy the papers. The sale is being conducted with much secrecy. Professor Chris Harper, JOUR, said, “A news organization is protected by the First Amendment and clearly gets a lot of advantages as a result of those protections, so one would expect that a news organization should be more forthcoming and less secretive.”

Philadelphia Neighborhoods leading ‘Web first, print later’ trend

The Columbia Journalism Review recently wrote about a counterintuitive trend they’ve seen cropping up among digital news sites. Some Web-only publications are starting to create print products to help boost revenue and reach people in areas that are lacking in Internet access.

“The Internet availability is probably forty or fifty percent in some [of these neighborhoods], so we found a really good reception to our print edition,” says Assistant Professor Christopher Harper, co-director of the Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab.

SCT alumnus brought ‘the beat’ to Philly – Philadelphia Inquirer

Inquirer music critic Dan DeLuca interviewed legendary Philadelphia music promoter Larry Magid, COMM ’64, about his book, My Soul’s Been Psychedelized: Electric Factory, Four Decades in Posters and Photography. Published by Temple University Press, the book illustrates how a “prim city loosened up and got the beat” — with Magid leading the way. “The book afforded me the opportunity to look back,” Magid says. But it also helped him realize that “you don’t want to be the guy in the corner telling Jimi Hendrix stories.”

When Casey Anthony was found not guilty on charges that she killed her daughter, people raced to their computers to voice their opinions on the verdict.

Associate Professor Paul Gluck, BTMM, says people tend to connect to news stories like this on an emotional level. And now, technology provides them a platform to tell the world how they feel.

“Social media in particular has provided people with a lot of impetus to participate, to observe, to connect,” he told NBC 10. “It’s a gut-level story. It doesn’t just engage you intellectually.”

Weiner scandal shows blogs’ true power – Philadelphia Inquirer

Blogger Andrew Breitbart is responsible for initially breaking the Anthony Weiner story, publishing the images that led to the scandal. He is the latest reminder of the blogosphere’s perpetual presence and occasionally devastating power. “The blogosphere does not observe the same rules as the legacy media. There’s only limited reporting, and no differentiation between reporting and analysis,” said Associate Professor Chris Harper, JOUR. “I think that’s actually a good thing. What I like about the blogosphere is that I don’t have to worry about vetting the source. I know where the source is coming from and can evaluate it … Read more »

Professor Mendelson says Palin’s ambiguous bus tour builds brand — Philadelphia Daily News

Sarah Palin’s bus tour rolled into Philadelphia May 31, causing a media frenzy at Independence Hall, and it’s left some media analysts asking, why? That ambiguity is precisely the point, according to some who think Palin is manipulating the media to build a potentially lucrative brand name. Associate Professor Andrew Mendelson, JOUR, expects this story to end with Palin laughing all the way to the bank. “This is about building up her brand and definitely mocking the mainstream media,” he said. “There’s an intentionality about what she’s doing.” … Read more »
