Heller comes to SCT from Temple’s College of Engineering, where he was assistant dean of finance and operations, but he is a familiar face in Annenberg Hall. Heller is an adjunct faculty member and has been director of the Communications Major and interim chair of the Theater Department. He has worked at Temple since 2000.

In his new role, Heller will be responsible for structuring and managing SCT’s operating budget. He also will work with the general manager of TUTV to oversee the new television station’s budget and administrative logistics and will oversee SCT’s facilities and information technology.

“Don Heller has a formal education in accounting, depth of management experience, and a track record in the cable television industry. In addition, he knows Temple and has both taught and held administrative posts within SCT. Don will be a superb addition to the administrative team for the school,” said Interim Dean Thomas Jacobson.

Heller is excited to be involved in the launch of Temple’s television station, as he has had extensive experience in the television industry at both Lenfest Communications and Prism/Sportschannel Philadelphia.

Heller hopes to determine early on the needs and wants of each of SCT’s departments and programs and work toward balancing those with the resources available to the school as it continuously adapts its curriculum to deal with the changing media landscape.

It has resulted in her landing the lead role in Ice Dreams, a Hallmark Entertainment film due to air in late January.

Bruno, FMA ’06, who now resides in L.A., wanted to take part in the internship “to come out here and give it a shot.”

Her initial goals were far different from her current career path, though. She interned with TBWA/Chiat/Day advertising agency in the hope of gaining some experience on the production side of commercials. Bruno successfully completed the internship and, following graduation, worked at a couple of commercial production companies.

But she soon realized that she was on the path toward her “plan B” goals and decided to quit her job and pursue acting. It’s been quite a ride ever since.

In 2008, she was signed by an agency and became a member of the Screen Actors Guild. That October, she auditioned for Ice Dreams.

“When I saw the sides, I knew the part was for me,” Bruno says. Sides are segments of a script used by actors at an audition.

The plotline, in many ways, parallels Bruno’s life. At one point in her childhood, Bruno had wanted to pursue competitive figure skating, but the process became too expensive for her parents to afford. Also, both Bruno and the movie character had to find ways to deal with their parents’ divorce.

The casting process for Ice Dreams was speedy one. Following her audition, Bruno was asked in come back the next day so they could see that she could skate. Soon afterward, her agent called her with the news that the role was hers if the producers could find a body double to complete the high difficulty jumps.

The very next day, Bruno’s agent called, starting the conversation with a few calming words before sharing the news that they found a body double and the role was hers. She was to be at the ice rink in 45 minutes.

“There was no time to celebrate,” Bruno recalls.

She says the five weeks of shoots were “surreal. I had my own trailer and I had people getting me tea if I needed it.”

(Photo by Justin Lubin/2009 Crown Media)

During the shoot, she ran into fellow SCT alumnus Tom Heigl, FMA ’06, who was working on the film’s camera crew. With a background in behind-the-scenes work, Bruno spent a lot of time with the crew and was interested in seeing how they worked. “The actor-crew relationship is really important,” she says.

Bruno, who grew up in Bensalem, Pa., and Northeast Philadelphia, transferred to Temple in her sophomore year. She’s thankful of that decision, as it led to the internship in L.A.

“Everything that has happened was a direct result of the internship, because that’s how I first met people [in L.A.],” she says.

Bruno recommends the experience to anyone thinking about a career in film or television. “You don’t know what’s out here until you get out here,” she says. “Once you get out here, your [career goals] can change.”

Bruno recently secured a public relations agent and continues to get her name into the public and go out on auditions.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she says. “The industry can have me when they want me.”
