Paul Barolsky, Upcoming Lecture…

“Paul Barolsky’s upcoming lecture, on Thurs March 29 (Anderson 007) at 5 pm on “Ovid and the Metamorphosis of European Art.” Paul insists it is a talk, not a lecture, by which he say he means, delivered not read. He is very engaging and personable, and dislikes scholarly pretense, and I know he will be hoping for a lot of interaction with the audience. So this is just a heads-up: you might want to bone up on his approach in his 9 books.”

CSC: Off-Campus Excursions: “The Daily You”

UPenn Excursion 2/8/12
The Daily You – book selling and discussion with author, Dr. Joseph Turow
As Dr. Turow said this evening, “it’s all about how you define reality; as relevant information or human rights.” Out of context this comment may seem strange or ambiguous, but on the contrary its meaning is quite related to the study of communication and how easily it can be misunderstood.
At 5:30p, Justin Dowdall, Kandace Kohr, Bryan Yanez and myself all boarded a regional rail train to University City, UPenn’s campus to listen to some informal commentary by author of The Daily You, Dr. Joseph Turow. His work is highly analytical and speculative of how online advertisers work to generate data, pin-point perfect consumers and ultimately question the limitations of privacy polices on the Internet. Dr. Turow argues that there is much controversy and perhaps budding “social discrimination” when it comes down to segregating online users by there assumed tastes and interests, marketing only certain brands and products the moment they log-on. I was lucky enough to have a question prepared this evening for the theorist which basically asked about the morality of advertisers and ultimately if this digital “social discrimination” will cause a civil rights movement. His response was largely based on educated assumptions and loose statistics, which, in his defense, is more than acceptable since the Internet itself, let alone online advertising, is fairly new, untamed and so widespread.
In conclusion, this event was wonderful (and so was the Starbucks break post-lecture!) and highly informative. I look forward to more off-Temple excursions and invite everyone to come! If you, ANY OF YOU, have ideas or plans that you want to share with the CSC community, please post on our Facebook page at your leisure. These are great opportunities to see the city, experience new ideas and people and have a great time broadening our horizons. Additionally, feel free to post reviews of events you have been to. We encourage diversity in perspective and lessons learned.
You all have something to say, so let’s hear it!

Student Collaboration on Sustainability Gets People Talking

Students in Dr. Scott Gratson’s CMST 1111 were put to the task when asked to focus on Sustainability on campus and how it relates to Media and Communication foundations.

“It was a group effort. We had a lot of fun and we worked very hard to achieve what did.” says transfer Justin Dowdall who is part of one team which focused on Sodexo. They created an installation piece available to view in Annenberg’s atrium. ”Ultimately, we hope our project will get people talking.”

Communications Studies Club Information

Ladies and Gentlemen Welcome to your 2011 Communications Studies Club!

And the topic is… “Race and Diversity at Temple”

http://www.facebook.com/groups/277867722257316/

Thank you to everyone that has come so far! The act of creating an organization from the ground up can be both tedious and time consuming. All of you that have shown up, have distinguished yourselves as top students and future leaders. As founding members, the insights that you as a group have already given, have played an invaluable role in shaping not only the future of the club, but the Temple University community as a whole.

  WHO WE ARE!

We are a group of students that will be producing theoretical and creative works that center on both communication forms and formats as they relate to a democratically formulated topic. Student will be free to explore the topic in anyway they chose, as long as it relates to both the topic and communications. We will then present these projects as a group to the Temple community, and the public sphere, in an Undergraduate Research Symposium type event at the end of every Semester. The topic will continue throughout the semester, after which a new topic will be picked. Also throughout the semester we will also work on bringing in speakers and specialists to talk with our group about how their field, or research, relates to our topic. We will also be pursuing external relationships with other groups by visiting their organizations, as a means of networking and learning what makes them a successful organization.

Elections will be held on the day that fits the majority of the group members. This was the only way that we could do this. If you cannot make the meeting for a good reason and still would like to hold a position as a founding member, then please send us the position that you think you should hold. A list of offices can be found at the end of this email in document form. Please include why you are a good candidate and we will present it to the group in your absence. We do not want anyone to not be involved just because of time restraints. As the group develops we will do our best to create both a time and location, that works for everyone. Please email us back ASAP if you wish to be a part of our first electoral process.

After elections the next step will include deciding as a group a two simple things

One: Bring your project proposals! Some projects that have already been vocalized and the club is very excited to help facilitate the next steps in making all of are fantastic ideas a reality.

Two: We must discuss when the first Communication Studies Club Research Symposium be held. Justin’s suggestion was February since it coincides with Black History Month, but we can talk about this at the elections meeting. This will also give us time to rent space to hold the event.

All: Elections have been held and I will be announcing and discussing the results through a soon to be produced video with the Club’s president available on this homepage.

Comm Studies Students at 2011 Emmy’s

Article by Jeff Cronin. jcronin@temple.edu

While some School of Communications and Theater students were on stage receiving awards at the Mid-Atlantic Emmys this fall, others were backstage helping to ensure the show ran smoothly. Darragh Friedman, COMM, was one of a few Communication Studies and Broadcasting, Telecommunication and Mass Media majors working backstage with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences crew during the Sept. 13 ceremony at the Philadelphia Marriott. In her second year at the event, Friedman spent the evening assisting the stage manager and made sure the right awards were being given to the right people. It was a thrill for her to spot the names of a few of her fellow students on the awards that night, she says. Friedman was unaware Temple SCT students had been nominated and was excited to be there to witness their wins. She says she enjoys all parts of communications and the entertainment business. Working backstage enables her to tap into “the pulse” of a production, but she would also love to be the on stage receiving an award one day, too. Her widespread interest is what drew Friedman to the Communication Studies major.

“I think the beauty of it is that you can touch on anything,” she says. “Communication Studies is not for the person who doesn’t know what they want to do, it’s for the person who wants to do everything.” Friedman says she is fascinated by how all of the pieces of communication fit together. She offers a film as an example, since writers, actors, technicians, publicists and advertisers all play an important role in a film’s success. And she hopes to learn about it all as she pursues her undergraduate degree. Friedman says the analytic parts of the Communication Studies curriculum has only served to heighten her love for all things communication. “You can’t do anything without learning how it got to be what it is today.” Still in her sophomore year, Freidman currently hopes to attend law school following her time at SCT and become a producer.
