Scholarships

The School of Communications and Theater offers several scholarships for academic tuition, internships, study away, and other opportunities. Additional opportunities are available through individual departments. Scholarship recipients will be contacted directly when selected, and winners’ names will then be posted online. Applications for scholarships are accepted once per semester, by the deadlines which will be posted on this page, all materials must be received by the due date for consideration, and late applications will not be accepted.

Applicants will be notified of their status by email in about 6-8 weeks from the application deadline.

Class Level Status

Freshman
0 – 29 credit hours
Sophomore
30 – 59 credit hours
Junior
60 – 89 credit hours
Senior
90 + credit hours

Unless otherwise specified, sophomore status (and an academic history at Temple) is required.

Special SCT Scholarships

These scholarships require a separate application from the SCT general scholarships. The links to the online applications and reference forms for each of the special SCT scholarships are noted in the descriptions below.  Award recipients are notified within eight weeks of the application deadline.

Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Scholarship

Established in honor of Lew Klein, by H.F. “Gerry,” Marguerite Lenfest, and Walter and Leonore Annenberg through the Annenberg Foundation. Funding applies to an internship or internship program, independent study project or international study. 3.0 GPA recommended and financial need required. Students are only eligible to receive the Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Scholarship once during their academic career.

  • Open to: SCT students for their sophomore, junior or senior year.
    Maximum award amount: $2,500

Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women Endowed Scholarship

Established by the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women.

  • Open to: SCT students (male or female) majoring in public relations, advertising, or film making for their junior year. Students must have junior status during the Spring 2012 semester.
  • Award amount: $2,500

Martha Menei Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Martha Menei Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 through a bequest from the estate of Martha Menei, a long-time friend of Temple University. The scholarship benefits students in several SCT programs, and a separate endowed scholarship fund was created from her estate at the Tyler School of Art.

  • Open to:  SCT juniors majoring in advertising, public relations, or filmmaking.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Maximum award amount: $4,000

George P. and Martina Jennings Endowed Scholarship Fund

Created in honor and Mr. and Mrs. Jennings by their family.

  • Open to:  students in any major for their junior year only.
  • Maximum award amount:  $3,000
  • The deadline for the Spring 2012 award is October 15.

Michael Buser Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in memory of Michael Buser ’76.

  • Open to:  SCT students in any major throughout the School.
  • Maximum award amount:  $500
  • The deadline for the Spring 2012 award is October 15.

Communications and Theater Scholarship Fund

Established in 1968 by Dean Kenneth Harwood.

  • Open to:  SCT students in any major throughout the School.
  • Maximum award amount:  $1,300
  • The deadline for the Spring 2012 award is October 15.

Robert Shackleton Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in memory of Mr. Shackleton, ’36, by Dr. and Mrs. Myles Martel.

  • Open to:  Students majoring in Film and Media Arts; Theater; or Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media with a preference for those interested in onscreen or public performance. Students must have completed two or more years of undergraduate coursework.
  • Maximum award amount: $2,500
  • The deadline for the Spring 2012 award is October 15.

Brenner Scholarship Fund

Established in 1987 by the Energy Education Advisory Council.

  • Open to:  SCT students in any major with a GPA of 3.5 or higher during their senior year only.
  • Maximum award amount:  $1,000
  • The deadline for the Spring 2012 award is October 15.

MacDonald Scholarship Fund

Established in 2004 by friends and colleagues in honor of John MacDonald upon his retirement as Executive Director of Temple University Alumni Association after 40 years of service to the university.

  • Open to:  SCT out-of-state students who have financial need, with preference given to students who are residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Maximum award amount:  $1,250
  • The deadline for the Spring 2012 award is October 15.
